THE IMPORTANCE OF HYDRAULIC HOSE INSPECTION

Hydraulic hosing is pivotal to the operation of the majority of hydraulic systems. So why is it so important to inspect your hydraulic hoses?

A hydraulic hose failure carries a far greater cost than merely replacement value. The potential consequences of hose failure can include the clean up, disposal and replacement of lost hydraulic oil, possible damage caused by contamination and operational downtime.

More importantly, there is also the issue of health and safety which should be considered. Hydraulic hoses have the capacity to cause serious harm if not inspected regularly and thoroughly. Often issues will arise as companies and personnel have become complacent with regards to hydraulic leaks. Hydraulic oil has the ability to cause slip and trip hazards, skin burn and irritation and most alarmingly, can be injected into the body if a hydraulic hoses bursts.

What should you look out for when inspecting a hydraulic hose?

Before commencing the inspection of your hydraulic hoses you must ensure that there is no hydraulic pressure anywhere within the hydraulic system or hydraulic hose. Ideally the hydraulic hose will be disconnected from the hydraulic pump and hydraulic cylinder prior to inspection. You can then run your hand up and down the hydraulic hose feeling and visually checking for kinks, splits, sharp bends and exposed braiding. If, upon inspection, you find any issue with the hydraulic hose, you should refrain from using it and replace immediately.

Working with hydraulic systems requires users to maintain vigilance over the conditions of their equipment. Regular inspections will ensure far fewer failures which will reduce any potential operation downtime and have a positive commercial impact. More importantly, you will be safeguarding the health and safety of all personnel.
